Description

This is how my Original Character Ralis Rutela looks in my fanfictions based on Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition, Baldur's Gate Siege of Dragonspear, Baldur's Gate 2 Shadows of Amn and Baldur's Gate 2 Throne of Bhaal, the one on the left is how Ralis looks in the first game and Siege of Dragonspear, and the one on the right is how he looks during Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal. Companion characters like Minsc, Viconia and Jaheira who appeared in the first Baldur's Gate game have new portraits, so why shouldn't my original character get the same treatment? Oh, I completely forgot to say that his first name is pronounced "Rah-leese". After all these months I forgot to let you all know that!

Originally back in 2013 I used one of the special custom portraits I had downloaded from :iconartastrophe: who gave out a link to download character portraits like this to be used in the Baldur's Gate games, but now as of 2022, I have found Artbreeder.com and learned how to use it, I have created three brand new portraits of my character Ralis: One for how he looks in the first game and Siege of Dragonspear, another where I made a girl version of him when he puts on the Belt of Masculinity/Femininity at one point in my personal novelization of Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition, and another that shows him having longer hair and facial hair during Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal. In the sequels of my Baldur's Gate fanfiction, Ralis looks a little different even though he won't age much during Shadows of Amn, he now has some facial hair and his hair has grown longer because the story happens several months later, and during that time he has been a test subject for a certain villainous mage.

Name: Ralis Rutela

Gender: Male

Age: 21 in 1368-1369 DR (during Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear), 22 to 24 in 1369-1371 DR (in Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn and Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal)
Birthdate: 14 Ches, 1347 DR
Year of the Bright Blade
Born under the Sign of the Golden Wheel
and with Crescent Selune under the sign of the Dragon

Those born under the Sign of the Golden Wheel are determined, self-motivated, enthusiastic and responsible. Natural leaders, they remain calm in a crisis and are not easily swayed by opposition. Although serious minded, they are cheerful and optimistic and do not give up easily.

Those born with Crescent Selûne under the sign of the Dragon are idealistic, progressive thinkers with strong humanitarian and spiritual principles. They thrive on change, becoming impatient with convention or restriction. Artistic and original, they can appear detached and aloof.

Race: Human (Bhaalspawn, Chondathan descent from mother)

Height: 5 feet and 9 inches

Weight: 172 lbs (78 kilograms)

Eyes: Light Brown

Hair: Dark Brown

Language(s): Common

Alignment: (In BG1 and SoD) Lawful Good (In BG2 SoA and ToB) Chaotic Good

Likes: Shadowdark Ale, funny stories and jokes, Viconia DeVir, Neera, Imoen, Dynaheir, Aerie, Khalid, Rasaad, Glint, M'Khiin, Yoshimo, Minsc, hearing stories about Drizzt Do'Urden, helping people in need, seeing lands he has never explored before

Hates: Worgs, innocent people being abused or tortured or murdered or forced to work under extreme conditions, irredeemable evil aligned people, Xzar, Baeloth Barrityl, Edwin Odesseiron, Bodhi, Jon Irenicus, Yaga-Shura, Abazigal, Amelyssan

Romance interest(s): Neera (During Baldur's Gate 1), Schael Corwin (During Siege of Dragonspear), Viconia DeVir (During Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal)

Personality: As a child, Ralis was quite a hellion, making Gorion's job of raising him not easy at all. However, when he was tamed by Gorion's lessons, Ralis became a mild mannered person who dreamed of a life of fun and adventure throughout the Realms, inspired by the tales of Faerun's many heroes, however, there were times when he skipped lessons that he found boring. A thoughtful, caring, brave and very charming person, Ralis can earn the trust and friendship of anyone, but he does NOT forgive betrayal unless it is proven that the betrayer has no ill will against him. He also does not forgive those of evil alignment who torture or murder innocent individuals-- if he sees or hears about an evil individual who has slain or tortured someone for sport or some other malicious reason, he usually will not hesitate to strike down that evil person with extreme prejudice. As a lawful good aligned human, based on Gorion's teachings, he used to believe that the law is flawless and defend those who can't defend themselves, but as a chaotic good aligned human, he sees that the law has flaws that those of evil alignment can exploit and manipulate to further their goals, and that those with a rebellious but good heart are necessary to defend the innocent because of the law's weaknesses. He also strongly believes in redemption, especially in the most evil of races, like the drow. He also proves to be good, charismatic leader, convincing people of different alignments to cooperate with one another.

Backstory (From my Baldur's Gate fanfictions)

Ralis was born to Bhaal himself, the god known as the Lord of Murder, and a priestess of Bhaal, a Chondathan human woman named Alianna in Ches 14th, 1347 DR. After Alianna gave birth to Ralis in a temple belonging to Bhaal somewhere in the southwestern outskirts of the Forest of Wyrms, she prepared to sacrifice him and many other Bhaal's children of varying ages from newborns like Ralis to three year olds like Sarevok. When Ralis was the last living newborn to be sacrificed to Bhaal even though he wasn't dead yet, Gorion and his fellow Harpers discovered the temple and mounted an assault, attacking every priest and priestess they encountered. When Gorion confronted Alianna, he was shocked and confused to see that his best friend and lover worships the Lord of Murder. He stopped her from sacrificing Ralis, but couldn't bring himself to slay her, but he didn't have to, a Harper armed with a bow and arrow shot Alianna instead. Gorion decided to adopt Ralis, knowing that Abdel, the first child of Bhaal he adopted after a paladin named Daesric the Pious saved Abdel from Deathstalkers and gave him to Gorion back in 1345 DR, would be happy to have someone fairly close to his age to play with, when Ralis gets older, that is, but Sarevok, who had been hiding from the Harpers, got left behind.

As Ralis grew up over the years from 1349 to 1359 DR, he and Abdel became fast friends, despite Abdel being four years older (Abdel was born in 1343 DR), and despite not knowing that they are children of Bhaal and actually half-brothers, getting into all kinds of mischief, but Gorion made sure to set Ralis and Abdel straight. Abdel, however, proved to be more rebellious while Ralis learned from the mistakes of his mischief making. Also as years passed, Gorion raised Ralis and Abdel on many stories of many different adventures and adventurers, lovers and infidels, battles and tragedies, all of this sparked the imaginations of Abdel and Ralis. Stories of heroes like Tristan Kendrick, Grunnarch the Red, the Knights of Myth Drannor were inspiring, but Ralis felt more inspired by the stories of the drow ranger Drizzt Do'Urden, and helped him realize that it is unfair to judge an individual from a race that is notoriously evil, because that individual might stand out from the crowd. Eventually Ralis decided that he wants to be like Drizzt, wielding two swords in combat. But, instead of scimitars, he decided to dual wield "Hand-And-A-Half Swords", or "Bastard Swords", which are naturally versatile, light, fast as lightning in offense or defense. Jondalar, Hull and Candlekeep's gatewarden trained Ralis on how to be proficient in using bastard swords, and Erik and Fuller taught Ralis how to use longbows. But one guard of Candlekeep, a woman named Lydia, took Ralis under her wing as an apprentice and trained him in the more advanced styles of sword combat, Then, in 1358 DR, a man named Winthrop arrived in Candlekeep with a girl named Imoen and opened up a hotel inside Candlekeep. Imoen, another child of Bhaal, was born in Baldur's Gate in 1348 DR. Her mother passed away during childbirth and she was promptly adopted by the man named Winthrop. In 1358 DR, the year when most of the gods known in the Forgotten Realms were forced to become mortals due to Bane and Myrkul stealing Ao's Tablets of Fate for absolute power, Winthrop and Imoen moved into Baldur's Gate. Imoen met Ralis and Abdel and they became close friends, getting into mischief and going on imaginary adventures.

In 1360 DR, when Abdel turned 17 years old, he asked Gorion to let him leave the walls of Candlekeep because he feels this nagging urge to go out and see the world and what it has to offer. Gorion was against the idea at first, but later, he reluctantly agreed and allowed Abdel to leave Candlekeep, leaving Ralis and Imoen as the only children left living inside Candlekeep. When Gorion asked Ralis does he feel any desire to leave Candlekeep, Ralis replied saying that he doesn't understand why he should leave Candlekeep when he is living a good life there. Besides, there is much about his past that he doesn't know. For years, Gorion has kept Ralis' heritage as a Bhaalspawn secret. He never told Ralis, or even Abdel that they are children of an evil dead god that has been dead ever since 1358 DR.

In 1368 DR, the events that catapulted Ralis out of Candlekeep began to unfold. Gorion instructed Ralis to prepare to leave Candlekeep, buying armor and some weapons. When they left Candlekeep, they were ambushed by Sarevok and some of his followers in the middle of the forest around nightfall. Gorion sacrificed his life to save Ralis, leaving him alone with the sole instruction of going to the Friendly Arm Inn to meet Khalid and Jaheira. The next morning Ralis found that Imoen snuck out of Candlekeep with them, and along the way, they encountered Zhentarim agents Montaron and Xzar. They picked up Khalid and Jaheira and went south to Nashkel, and met and recruited Neera in Beregost. After stopping the kobolds led by a half-orc named Mulahey who were contaminating the iron in the Nashkel iron mines, Ralis and his party discovered an organized conspiracy to poison all the iron in the Sword Coast, and behind it all is a corrupt mercantile organization called the Iron Throne. As Ralis fought against the Iron Throne, he made more companions, Rasaad, Xan, Minsc and Dynaheir, Dorn, Viconia, Ajantis, Safana, Kivan and Coran, but Xan and Kivan did not survive the adventure. Eventually Ralis discovered that Sarevok wants to usurp his foster father, take control of the Iron Throne and use the iron crisis they started to push for war against the nation of Amn, believing that murder on a massive scale will elevate Sarevok into godhood, allowing him to become the new lord of murder, but his Bhaalspawn half-brother Ralis put a stop to that, killing Sarevok to avenge Gorion and saving Baldur's Gate from going to war against Amn.

In the final months of 1368 DR, a new conflict emerged. A crusade led by an aasimar woman named Caelar Argent settled in Dragonspear Castle after forcefully conscripting villagers to join their crusade. After the crusaders sent assassins to assassinate Ralis and Imoen, Ralis decided to get involved in the war against Caelar's crusade, joining the Flaming Fist along with Flaming Fist captain Schael Corwin, Minsc, Dynaheir, Safana and Viconia as they travel north to the spot where the armies of Waterdeep and Daggerford have gathered. Along the way, Ralis welcomed Rasaad, Neera, Khalid, Jaheira and Dorn back into his party, and welcomed new faces like Glint, M'Khiin, Voghiln, Baeloth and Jovan Goldmarsh himself. The war against Caelar and her crusaders took them to Avernus, where Ralis learned that Caelar's right hand man Hephernaan has been secretly working for a devil named Belhifet, the same devil that was defeated by Jovan Goldmarsh and his party in Icewind Dale little more than 80 years ago. He also learned that Caelar Argent deceived her crusade into helping her get into Avernus from Dragonspear Castle to save her uncle with the false promise that they too would save their loved ones who perished in the two Dragonspear Wars, because as an arrogant child, Caelar foolishly fell into Belhifet's hands, and her uncle had to save her by trading himself to Belhifet for Caelar's freedom, and ever since then Caelar resolved to save her uncle from paying for a mistake that she made. After defeating Belhifet for good, Caelar chose to stay behind in Avernus to close the portal that bridges the Material Plane and Avernus, and fight off any devil that gets in her way. Not long after victory was celebrated, Skie Silvershield, the daughter of Grand Duke Entar Silvershield was found murdered, and Ralis had been accused of the murder. After being taken back to Baldur's Gate and jailed for murder. While in prison, the hooded man who had been evaluating Ralis ever since he left Baldur's Gate with the Flaming Fist on the road to Dragonspear Castle revealed that he is the one who actually murdered Skie, using the Soultaker Dagger to take her soul and preventing any clerics from bringing her back from the dead. Ralis was broken out of jail and reunited with Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira, Minsc and Dynaheir, and they resolved to help Ralis track down the real murderer and clear Ralis' name. However, before they could get far, a group of assassins knocked them out and captured them.

The members of the Shadow Thieves guild took unconscious Ralis and his party to Amn on the orders of Jon Irenicus the hooded man, and when he had them in his laboratory under Waukeen's Promenade in Athkatla, he subjected Ralis and Imoen to painful torture methods, including Abdel, who he had also captured on a separate time, to the Summer of 1369 DR. He also killed Khalid and Dynaheir during his painful experiments, which Ralis and his party soon learned when they managed to break out the moment the Shadow Thieves guild attacked Irenicus' lab because they learned that Irenicus had taken some members of their guild as products of his experiments. During the battle, the Cowled Wizards intervened and arrested Irenicus and Imoen for illegally spellcasting without having a permit to do so. Abdel arranged a meeting with a man named Gaelan Bayle who promised Ralis, Minsc, Jaheira, Yoshimo and Abdel that he can get them in touch with people who can help them locate where the shadow Thieves have taken Imoen and Irenicus, but they have to pay a LOT of coins to earn their services. And so Ralis and his part begin their year long journey through Amn, doing many quests to earn money. They also reunited with familiar faces like Neera, Dorn, Edwin, Rasaad, Viconia, and met new companions like Aerie, Nalia, Anomen, Mazzy, Valygar, Hexxat, Jan, Cernd, Korgan, an elven sorceress Tashia, and a mysterious, deeply stoic half-elf man named Althirion, and as time passed, Ralis and Viconia started to develop a romantic relationship, but it did not last long, because of Lolth wanting to kill Viconia for her defiant act long ago which led up to her exile. When the time came for Ralis to pay Gaelan early into 1370 DR, he and his party got involved in the war between the Shadow Thieves Guild and the Vampire Guild. Not knowing what they were getting into, Abdel, Jaheira and a few of Ralis' companions unwittingly joined Bodhi's vampire guild, and when the war reached its climax, Ralis had to make a choice: continue siding with the Shadow Thieves, or allow the death of Aran Linvail to save Abdel's life. Ralis chose the latter, and Bodhi's guild ended up winning the war with Aran Linvail dead.

Saemon Havarian, a ship captain that Bodhi hired, took her, Ralis and his entire party to an island called Brynnlaw where Spellhold is located, and there Ralis had so many answers revealed to him after being betrayed by Yoshimo. Irenicus is the true identity of the hooded man who murdered Skie Silvershield to force the people of Baldur's Gate to reject Ralis, and Imoen and Abdel are children of Bhaal too. After getting his Bhaalspawn powers taken by Irenicus, Ralis gained the ability to transform into a monster known as The Slayer, and he and his party chased Irenicus and Bodhi into the Underdark by at first sailing with Saemon Havarian back to Amn, but getting stopped by the githyanki who want their sacred weapon back that Saemon stole and, thrown overboard to be rescued by the sahuagin, then after settling a civil war in the sahuagin city in deep caverns under the ocean, they make their way to the Underdark from the sahuagin caverns, helped a female silver dragon called Adalon rescue her egg from the drow of Ust Natha, and eventually managed to make their way back to the surface. After being tasked by Elhan, the commander of Suldanesselar's military force to find Bodhi and return with the Rhynn Lantorn to get into Suldanessellar, Ralis and his party reunited with Coran and Safana (Safana died trying to betray Ralis to a pack of wolfweres), then they were tasked by the followers of Helm at Watcher's Keep to seal away the "Imprisoned One", Demogorgon forever, but they failed and Ralis and his party had to defeat Demogorgon, sending him back to the Abyss. Afterwards, Bodhi kidnapped Viconia, then Tashia got kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend Arillistan, who is also a Bhaalspawn (Ralis tried to save Tashia, but he failed and she died while he tried to stop Arillistan), then Ralis went mad with insanity over the loss of his friends and lover, and after making up his mind that he will explore his power as The Slayer, he escaped before Althirion could kill him. After a few days of wandering the Forest of Tethir alone, killing wildlife and wandering adventurers as The Slayer, Ralis found and recruited Drizzt Do'Urden and his companions Bruenor Battlehammer, Regis, Catti-brie and Wulfgar and some knights from Sir Anomen's Order, and reunited with his own companions to attack Bodhi's vampire guild, rescue Viconia and obtain the Rhynn Lantorn to get into Suldanessellar to chase after Irenicus. Before Drizzt and his companions went their separate ways from Ralis, however, Drizzt imparted some important life lessons to Ralis, lessons that prove vital to his perspective on life and his relationship with Viconia. That lesson was to learn how to see life from the perspective of an elf, to enjoy the present day instead of worrying about the future, because fearing a bleak future and making all kinds of sacrifices to prevent it instead of enjoying the moment brings out the evil in you.

After getting into the elven city, Ralis and his party tracked down Irenicus to a sacred tree where he is trying to obtain more power at the price of destroying Suldanessellar. at that point, Ralis learned about Irenicus' past from Ellesime, and during his fight against Irenicus, Ralis found that he no longer hated Irenicus, but pitied the man, seeing him as a shattered soul that Ralis would have become if Drizzt had not taught him to enjoy the present day with friends and lovers instead of trying to prevent a bleak future where his friends and lovers are gone or dead, as fear is a path to loneliness and emotional suffering, a path that Jon Irenicus has already walked on. After stopping Irenicus, Ralis and his party are hailed as heroes, and Ralis sends Abdel to return the Soultaker Dagger to Baldur's Gate so that clerics can bring Skie Silvershield back from the dead. However, a couple months after Irenicus' defeat, Ralis got wrapped up in another conflict. This time he had to fight against more of his Bhaalspawn brothers and sisters, especially five very powerful children of Bhaal known as "The Five". They are: Illasera the half-elf, Yaga-Shura the half-fire giant, Sendai the half-drow, Abazigal the half-blue dragon, and Balthazar the human monk, who they didn't know at the time they met Balthazar is also a Bhaalspawn, and the only child of Bhaal of The Five who isn't evil aligned. On top of this, Althiron had assembled a team of adventrurers whose goal is to kill every child of Bhaal they come across, that includes Ralis, Imoen and Abdel. After defeating The Five, and convincing Althirion that the Bhaalspawn war will not end with Bhaal's revival, Ralis and Abdel confronted Amelyssan, who pretended to be a kindhearted woman who wanted to offer shelter to the children of Bhaal in Saradush in Tethyr, but she happened to be a high priestess of Bhaal gone rogue, she wants to betray her dead god by becoming a goddess herself. Ralis and Abdel defeated Amelyssan, and since Ralis, Abdel and Imoen are supposedly the last three children of Bhaal left alive (No one, not even the Solar knows that Ralis helped one of his half-brothers, Viekang, the guy who will eventually kill Abdel a century later in 1482 DR in the events of "Murder in Baldur's Gate" escape Saradush before Yaga-Shura and his fire giants destroyed the city), Imoen and Ralis decided not to ascend to godhood and gave up their energies as Bhaalspawn to become normal humans as the Solar angel instructed, and their portions of Bhaal's essence were sent to Mount Celestia for safekeeping, but Abdel Adrian did not want to give up his portion Bhaal's essence and secretly ran off without telling anyone where he is going.

With the Bhaalspawn threat defeated, Ralis, Imoen, Abdel and their companions went their separate ways. Ralis and Viconia moved to a city called
Nimpeth in the Vilhon Reach where Ralis became an important politician over the next few years, and eventually Viconia became pregnant with their first and only child, that they named Vallis. On Vallis' 6th birthday, which was in the year 1377 DR, Viconia was poisoned by a yochlol, and before she died, she said her final words to Ralis and her half-drow son before passing away. Ralis raised Vallis as a widowed father for a few months until some Witches of Rashemen, one of them Dynaheir's sister, arrived and gave him a gift for aiding Minsc and Dynaheir: a Tablet of Reawakening. Ralis used the tablet to bring Viconia back and live his entire life in peace with his lover and son. He died from old age in the year 1440 DR.
